Burkard Celebrates 71st Anniversary!

In 1937, Hans and Rosa Burkard opened Burkard Nurseries specializing in delphiniums and pansies. Delphinium, well grown and properly used, adds a dignity and a distinction to the garden that are rarely afforded by other flowers. More than six decades later, Burkard Nurseries still carry a large variety of this aristocrat of flowers.

Visiting Burkard Nurseries in springtime is akin to stepping into a Monet landscape where colours will seduce and the senses will come alive. Young foliage, plump buds and voluptuous blooms vie for attention. Frank Burkard, Jr. stocks the Nursery with the best quality of plants. Choose a healthy plant now and it will reward the gardener for many days to come.

The Nursery has secured a large quantity of the yellow-booming clivia miniata, a hybrid of the South African native that is a striking member of the amaryllis family. A brilliant cluster of funnel-shaped flowers rises from dense clumps of dark green strap-shaped long leaves. Frank Burkard, Jr. also likes the clivias for the ornamental gold berries that follow the flowers and recommends them for their handsomeness in shaded borders and their superb performance in containers.

For shady gardens, as choice and dignified a shrub as the azalea and the rhododendron, the camellia's dark and glossy foliage is an asset, which alone makes it worth growing. Additionally, the almost unreal perfection of the blooms makes the camellia doubly valuable. No sunny garden should be without lavender. Plant them along paths, near gates, in borders, the English and French varieties make beautiful low hedges. Along with these splendid shrubs and perennials, the Nursery stocks a range of other plants that will enliven any garden.

Since the opening day in 1937, the Nursery has relied on the personal touch-both in the plants that it stocks and in the sort of service that a client can expect-to build on its base of loyal customers. The Burkard selection of plants-including a variety of herbs, rare and exotic trees, shrubs, ground covers, Japanese maples, vegetable starters, annuals, perennials, and seasonal bulbs, in addition to a large collection of roses-reflects the commitment to quality and variety. The same philosophy is demonstrated in the range of offerings in the garden accessory and furnishing sections. As ever, the friendly owner and staff are eager to share their plant knowledge.

Burkard Nurseries, located at 690 North Orange Grove Boulevard in Pasadena (corner of Lincoln and North Orange Grove), is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Mondays to Saturdays, and from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sundays. Need directions? Click here.
