Summer
Garden Checklist
While June 21st may be the official start of summer,
we gardeners in Southern California relish the still-cool
days of June gloom. As spring makes its
way into summer we can still get out in the yard and
do some planting well into Fourth of July, when the
sun will bid the high clouds and cooler morning temperatures
adieu.
Though
watering, mulching and weeding are your primary chores
in summer, Burkard Nurseries can supply any of your
plant or seed needs as well as colorful and unusual
garden art for that perfect spot in your landscape.
Keep
planting those vegetables! Biweekly planting from seed
or our healthy six packs of cucumbers, heat-tolerant
lettuce and squash will prolong your harvest well into
fall. Experiment with our many varieties of tomatoes
and peppers. If you want a pumpkin for Halloween, plant
one before the 15th of June.
Some
of the best plants, sold at Burkards, for hot
summer weather are verbena, vinca rosea and zinnia,
but one can also choose from Burkards large assortment
of various bedding plants. Our
colorful canna lilies are real show-stoppers! The Tropicanna
Gold, Canna has vivid orange-yellow flowers with a dark
orange-speckled throat and large exotic leaves striped
with green and gold. In the garden or in a container
this plant will provide dramatic color during its long
bloom season. Other summer and fall bloomers include
agapanthus, daylily, coreopsis, dusty miller, gaillardia,
gerbera and yarrow. |
